Most of us are distant cousins. The only DNA test that you should get done is called an autosomal DNA test. This covers every past grandparent. They are now finding common native markers that are being discovered year by year. Most DNA testing companies offer this new deep ancestral test that will provide a percentage of native ancestry if there is any (Make sure that that they will report ANY percentage---some cut it off at 5%). The farther from a native ancestor the less markers there are. (But remember you don't need this to identify as a Metis--it's only a personal thing!)
My choice for DNA testing is http://www.dnatribes.com/
You have enough information (without any documents) to register with our Montagnais Metis Family for free. My mother did the 23andme DNA test, which gave a negative result in terms of Native American ancestry, but then I read your article on this and wonder still. We have two oral family stories and a photograph of my Great Great Grandmother, plus an additional incident that keep pointing my research in this direction, but I find nothing online. What do you recommend?Katehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15857735547455423530noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-954616472560690638.post-61736313005503344722013-08-11T11:08:37.425-07:002013-08-11T11:08:37.425-07:00It's amazing how family origins often are not ...It's amazing how family origins often are not clear cut! Past generations are not aware of how important their lives are to their descendants!
As for proof. We all face the same dilemma! In most cases there simply isn't any documentation and there never will be! (this doesn't mean, however, that we stop searching!)
Family history, including rumor, is therefore important. If your grandfather is said (by family word of mouth) to be a direct descendant of Michel Richard, then that is what you must record in your genealogical tree.
Also you would certainly be a M'kmaq Metis! He is also my gr...grandfather!
Our Montagnais Metis organization will accept this evidence because your ancestry comes from the early development of Canada, known to be mostly Metis people.(Don't let the controversy dissuade or discourage you!)ANYONE in Canada, by virtue of the charter of rights, can mutually associate with whom they wish! To be Metis is not in the factual proof but in self declaration!
to reply privately send an email to info@montagnaismetis.ca
R J C Roland (Roly) Belangerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15785194537644345151noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-954616472560690638.post-4520760191837566062013-08-09T21:02:14.920-07:002013-08-09T21:02:14.920-07:00My grandfather is a direct decendant of Michel Ric...My grandfather is a direct decendant of Michel Richard dit sansoucy but was said to have been adopted by a white family at a Young age.
